Markus Thonett’s is an Artist who uses familiar every-day-materials not usually associated with art. His work is at its best when experienced in person and seems to resonate with something well and whole within us. The work for this show is inspired by working outdoors. Dark skeletal silhouettes of trees against plain and moody backgrounds appear strangely upbeat and playful, especially when we realise that the marks are not applied with paint or ink but gouged and hacked out of Melamine and Formica. The hard and jagged edges of the white surface is complimented beautifully by the warm tones of the stained sub-materials.
As well as being calm and beautiful pieces that would look well in any scheme, Markus’ work provides a talking point and an interesting variant on familiar materials and content in a new and fresh context.
